988 — National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

Helpful Tips

Starting tomorrow, July 16, 2022. Americans will have access to a new National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 988. This is an important step in increasing the accessibility of life-saving interventions and resources (vibrant.org, 2020). 988 will direct those in need to trained counselors and other mental health professionals.

The new calling code, 988, also raises public awareness about suicide and establishes an easy to remember three–digit number. Previously, it was a 10–digit 800 number. Other benefits include overall better mental health response, and providing help quicker to those in need. Rather than calling 911, whom would generally connect you to law enforcement agencies, there is now a dedicated line with mental health professionals.

Currently, 988 is NOT active. This will become active on July 16, 2022. Those in need call 800-273-8255, or text HOME to 741741. These services will continue in addition to the new 988 calling code.
