What Is an ONT?

Helpful Tips

Pioneer Connect Fiber introduces supersonic speeds, amazing internet experiences, and more opportunities for our communities. To deliver that experience and supersonic speeds, special equipment will need to be installed at your home or business. Have you heard of an “ONT”? If you have Fiber internet, you may have noticed a grey box on the side of your home or in your garage. This box is known as an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) (see picture example) and allows light signals to be converted into usable electrical signals for your router.

An ONT essentially is a portal allowing you to connect at the speed of light. Light pulses are sent down fiber lines and then converted into a usable signal to the router from which you connect devices via ethernet or wireless.

PLACEMENT OF AN ONT

ONTs can usually be found on the outside of a home. Other times they are inside a garage or building which is more cost-effective than the latter. As a cooperative, we put our member’s interests at the forefront of our decision-making. Installing indoor ONTs allows the Cooperative to save approximately 70% on each unit. This is why we have made it standard to place the ONT inside whenever possible.
